Alternates to Bucket-List Locations
Pilgrimage towns in Lazio and Tuscany you've never heard of
In today’s world of overtourism, if you don’t want to follow bucket-list crowds, these barely known towns (one in Tuscany and two in Lazio) will give you some intriguing ideas for your next (crowd-free) trip. When I walked on Italy’s pilgrimage route for over a month, I arrived in these towns that I knew nothing about, and still probably wouldn’t be aware of, had they not been on the route.
The ultimate way to discover them is on foot, following in the steps of medieval pilgrims on the Via Francigena (fran-CHEE-jee-nah)1. But you don’t need hiking boots to get to these places—they’re accessible by train or car and refreshingly unspoiled.
